Choosing original artwork for your home can feel surprisingly personal.
You can know the exact sofa you want, have your paint colors selected, and still find yourself standing in front of a blank wall wondering:
What belongs here?
The good news is that there is no single formula for choosing art.
The best pieces usually have a little bit of intuition involved.
Here are a few things I consider when choosing artwork for a space.
01. Start with the feeling, not the color
It can be tempting to look for artwork that perfectly matches your pillows, rug, or curtains.
Instead, I like to ask:
How do I want this room to feel?
Calm and collected?
Romantic?
Energizing?
Warm?
Dreamy?
A painting doesn't have to match every color in a room to belong there. Sometimes the most beautiful pieces introduce a color that wasn't there before and give the entire space a new point of interest.
02. Pay attention to scale
One of the biggest mistakes I see when choosing artwork is going too small.
A large painting can completely transform a room.
It creates a focal point and allows the artwork to feel intentional rather than like an accessory that was added at the very end.
When I'm creating a commission, scale is one of the first things I think about. The artwork should have enough presence for the space it occupies while still allowing the rest of the room to breathe.
03. Look at the room's natural light
Light changes everything.
A painting can look completely different in morning light, afternoon light, and evening light.
This is especially important with expressive, layered artwork because subtle colors can reveal themselves differently throughout the day.
Before choosing a piece, notice when the room gets the most natural light and where that light falls.
Your home is constantly interacting with your artwork.
04. Don't be afraid of contrast
A neutral home does not necessarily need neutral artwork.
In fact, one of my favorite ways to make a quiet space feel more personal is to introduce a painting with unexpected color or movement.
Contrast gives a room energy.
And if your home is already full of color, a softer painting can create the balance that allows everything else to breathe.
05. Choose something you want to live with
This is perhaps the most important one.
Original art is different from decorating around a trend.
You are choosing something that may stay with you for years.
So ask yourself:
Do I keep coming back to it?
Does it make me feel something?
Can I imagine seeing it every morning?
Does it remind me of something — a place, a season, a feeling, a dream?
The right painting doesn't always make the most sense on paper.
Sometimes you simply know.
Art should feel personal
A beautiful home isn't necessarily one where everything matches.
It is one where everything feels intentional.
Original artwork gives you the opportunity to bring something into your home that cannot be replicated exactly anywhere else.
It carries the artist's hand, the process, the imperfections, the layers, and the story behind its creation.
And eventually, it becomes part of your story, too.
When you choose art, I hope you give yourself permission to choose with both your eye and your heart.
Because the best piece for your home isn't always the one that matches perfectly.
It's the one you never get tired of looking at.
